Holly Road Trestle to Trail Project moves towards design phase

After applying for the TxDOT grant that would make the bridge possible, the city hit the ground running.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas —

Back in October, TxDOT granted the city $13 million to construct the Holly Road Trestle to Trail Project. That funding came from the department's Transportation Alternative Grant Program.

Once the project is finished, it will transform the way hikers and bikers travel across the Oso Bay.

Director of engineering services, Jeff Edmonds says the city is currently waiting on an advance funding agreement from TxDOT that will come back to city council for approval once complete.

"Meantime, we are moving forward with some of the preliminary activities, environmental clearance and things like that that need to be done. After we get the advance funding agreement from TxDOT, we'll be entering into a detail design contract," Edmonds said.

That pedestrian bridge would allow people to walk, run and cycle to and from the Oso Bay Wetlands Preserve and Flour Bluff.

"It is going to be a 15-foot-wide path and bridge," said Edmonds. "There's going to be some bulb-outs on there that people could fish off of. I mean, this is a cool project. A lot of the projects that we do here don't have that cool aspect, but I'm a bike rider myself. I can't wait to be able to ride across this."

After applying for the TxDOT grant that would make the bridge possible, the city hit the ground running. Now this year, Edmonds says the city is turning its focus to planning the bridge's design.

“Design work will be going on this year. it is probably going to be next year or early 2026 before actual construction begins," he said.
