USS Lexington Museum to honor its first combat fatalities in 80th anniversary ceremony Monday

Monday is the 80th anniversary of the torpedo attack that killed nine crew members in 1943.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Carson Manning began volunteering at the USS Lexington Museum in 2021. Last year, he discovered a lack of any memorial recognizing the victims of a torpedo attack in 1943.

On Monday, he and two other dedicated museum volunteers will pay tribute to the nine crew members who lost their lives in the Lexington's first combat fatalities as a result of hostile activity on Dec. 4, 1943. It will be the 80th anniversary of the events that led to their death.

Manning, Nancy Krupa and Deborah Rudder have been researching the lives and deaths of the USS Lexington crew members since June of this year to pay tribute to their sacrifices while serving their country.

On the evening of Dec. 4, 1943, the USS Lexington encountered her first combat fatalities when a Mitsubishi G4M "Betty" aircraft deployed a Type 91 torpedo, which struck the vessel, making the USS Lexington the first of only two Essex Class aircraft carriers to be hit by a torpedo.

Manning will host the memorial service on Monday at 2:00 p.m. at the USS Lexington Museum on 2914 N. Shoreline Blvd.
