Residents react to vehicle ban on Padre Island Beach

A temporary boundary has been put in with wooden bollards on the way.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — There is a change on Padre Island this summer that's something new for beachgoers vehicles are now banned on a famous stretch of beach near the island seawall.

When beach erosion leaves the beach less than 150 feet wide state law requires that cars be kept out for safety reasons. About two-thirds of the beach at the seawall has been closed to traffic since the Memorial Day weekend.

A temporary boundary has been put in with wooden bollards on the way.

For beach vendors, it's been a mixed bag.

Beachgoers here can take advantage of the nearby parking lot and air-conditioned bathrooms.  Also, as things now stand there will be no beach renourishment here until after the summer of 2020 at least, so until then if you come to the seawall be prepared to walk.
