Aransas Pass' future looks bright with 20-year plan

The Coastal Bend town of less than 10,000 residents that has taken several hits by storms over the years has plans to rebuild itself.

ARANSAS PASS, Texas — A Coastal Bend city is investing in its future with its first-ever 20-year plan that will make a big impact in the community.

Aransas Pass is a small town of less than 10,000 residents and has taken several hits by storms over the years. It now has plans to rebuild itself.

The city manager of Aransas Pass Gary Edwards believes the plan, named 'Navigate 44' will help the community move forward.

"This is an update of the original plan, comprehensive plan, and the cities' first plan that was approved back in 2018 to 2019," Edwards said. "But things have been occurring so rapidly and so many changes have occurred post-hurricane that we felt and correctly so believed that an update is necessary."

The plan focuses on several important points to prepare the city for future storms, give locals new opportunities and become an attractive travel destination for tourists.

"Also, we will be looking at issues such as where we want the Conn Brown Harbor to be during this period in the next 20 years," Edwards said. "We’ve made significant, massive improvements out there of logistical or infrastructure nature. Now, it’s time to begin bringing in a development.

Edwards says the new city planning director, Brenda Joyas will play a critical role in the future of the city.

"Everybody is starting to see the town is coming back on its feet and so, I think it just helps the community know that we know what we're doing to get the city into a position where we can be more vital for more businesses and residential," Joyas said.

The city asked the residents for their input and more than 100 people responded with suggestions which Edwards will incorporate into the final plan.

"All the information that’s been collected for the past several months is being written up at this point and we anticipate by June approximately the plan will be completed and presented to the council, planning and zoning," Edwards said.

The city of Aransas Pass is planning to reveal the 20-year plan to the community in June once the city council approves the final version.
