CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — When Ashlynn Gomez was just 23 years old, she received the news from her doctor that she was positive for Stage 2 breast cancer. That was in June of 2020-- the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic.
"My world kinda... I was in shock. I basically froze," she explained to 3NEWS.
"So, when he had told me he's like, 'Do you have any questions?' You know, in regard to this," Gomez continued.
"I did not, I was just like, wait, what did you say? And he said, well, you have Stage Two breast cancer."
Gomez says that call was just a small foreshadowing in how her treatment would go, being that it was during a global pandemic. Another struggle she faced was fighting with insurance to get her on the proper treatment plan since she was diagnosed early, and young.
What ensued next was a battle, with Gomez determined to fight for her right to medical treatment.
"I was just like, you know what, you're not gonna tell me. No, I stayed assistant, and I did have to leave within that two week back home. But I made sure every day I called because I knew that something was wrong."
On the morning, she was set to begin chemotherapy she got another earth-shattering call that would change everything.
