31-year-old in custody after lengthy high-speed chase in stolen vehicle

The chase began in Port A, ending just outside of Mathis Wednesday evening.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Preston Wright, 31, of Orange Grove is in custody after a high-speed chase in a stolen 2008 Peterbilt truck tractor took law enforcement across several city limits Wednesday, according to DPS Sgt. Rob Mallory.

Wright has been transported to the San Patricio County Jail and is being charged with evading arrest with a vehicle, driving while intoxicated and aggravated assault on a peace officer.

According to Mallory, Port Aransas police responded when the chase began near Mustang Island on Wednesday evening, however Troopers took over when the driver crossed into Corpus Christi on State Hwy. 361.

During the chase, a tire flew off of the 18-wheeler and hit King Ranch Ag and Turf on SPID, according to CCPD officials.

Mallory said Texas Highway Patrol and CCPD sent out multiple tire deflation devices along State Hwy. 358 that Wright was able to avoid and threw beer bottles towards law enforcement.

As the chase continued to IH-37, Wright attempted to strike several officers as they set out more tire deflation devices. The lead trooper fired their service weapon at the back tire and the tire deflation devices were successful, according to Mallory.

The vehicle came to a stop on IH-37 just south of State Highway 188, outside of Mathis.
