Former Domingo Live host Luis Alonso Muñoz has died

Domingo Peña entrusted host duties to Alonso Muñoz in the late 70's.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Former Domingo Live host Luis Alonso Muñoz has died.

According to a social media post from his son, the Spanish-language radio pioneer passed away Friday. It is not yet known what caused his death.

Alonso Muñoz was a well-known radio legend for his presence on the Corpus Christi radio station KUNO.

He was close friends with the Doming Live show's namesake, Domingo Peña. After battling Alzheimer's, Peña passed the baton to front the show to Alonso Muñoz in the late 70's. He was joined by co-host Mike Chavez in November 1981.

Viewers were skeptical of the duo after the legendary Peña but grew to continue to love the show after about six months.

“Luis and I we told the general public, 'We are not Domingo Peña, we are not going to copy Domingo Peña, we are going to do our show the way that it has to be done.' And that’s what we did," Chavez said in an interview with 3NEWS celebrating Domingo Live's 60th anniversary

Chavez said Alonso Muñoz was adamant about getting the show out of the studio and into the community. They would take the show to the Sunrise Mall and other venues around South Texas.

"When we took the show, it had some of the lowest ratings and we took it to some of the highest ratings in the entire area,” Chavez said.

After about two decades they passed on host duties to Joseph Valdez and Sally Narvaez.

Chavez and Alonso Muñoz were inducted into the La Musica del Sur de Tejas in 2019.
