CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The 25th annual surf camp for people with disabilities took place in Port Aransas today.
In addition to the locals, about 125 people came from out of state to feel the thrill of surfing at the Make Promises Happen Surf Camp for our Friends with Disabilities event.
Texas Coastal Bend Surfrider Foundation Co-Chair Cliff Schlabach says the surf camp allows all special-needs people to experience independence and positive ramifications.
"Everybody here has a smile on their face. Everybody leaves feeling uplifted. This program is absolutely the most uplifting program you can take part in and all of these campers, a lot of them, the majority of them, this is not their first year to do it," Schlabach said.
Schlabach began this event with his wife back in 1998 to help the blind and vision impaired but they have now expanded to allow everyone to have a chance to ride the waves, which ensures that people with any disability can participate fully and comfortably.
