Are Pre-K students in CCISD schools having their diapers changed on the floor of the bathroom?

That's the accusation that the CCAFT teacher's union is making after complaints from teachers.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The president of the local AFT teacher union blasted CCISD administrators and school board members claiming that pre-k three classroom teachers are changing students' diapers on bathroom floors.

A school board member told 3NEWS she heard the same charges weeks ago and turned the information over to the superintendent.

Self-described community activist, Becky Moeller, was one of a number of people who showed up for a news conference at the AFT teacher’s union hall.

”The paras and the teachers are fearful that if they bring this up they will be terminated or disciplined,” Moeller said.

She said this is what she was told by teachers in one of CCISD’s 31 pre-k programs.

”They were new employees and they were appalled that they were changing the kids on the bathroom floors," Moeller said. "On the naked floors changing their diapers. They don’t have changing tables it’s unsafe. They don’t have good disposal things, it’s not safe.”

The issue had CCAFT President Dr. Nancy Vera so upset, she called the news conference.

”CCISD has compromised the health and safety of the very students to whom they are entrusted,” Vera said.

She said she hasn’t gotten any answers from CCISD officials or board members on this issue.

”This is unacceptable and this is a health hazard for our entire community,” Vera said.

We asked CCISD about the allegations and did get answers.

In a statement to 3NEWS, the district said it has not received any parent concerns on this topic this school year. We were also told that changing stations are designed for younger children and may present a safety hazard. District officials said children are assisted while standing.

The AFT Union President also had questions about teacher safety.

"What about the protective equipment for the children, I mean, the teachers? And the para professionals?" Vera said.

CCISD’s statement also included a call for any staff members needing additional equipment to speak with their principals.
