CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Corpus Christi residents, including our own chief meteorologist Alan Holt, reported seeing a B-52 bomber flying in the area Tuesday afternoon.
Naval Air Station-Corpus Christi officials said that was indeed the case.
The aircraft, also known as the B-52H Stratofortress, flew past the base as part of the 'Pilot for a Day' program, which is designed to give children with terminal or very serious illness an experience of a lifetime.
3NEWS spoke with George Ruiz, the man who has organized the event for the last 21 years, said he took the children on a tour of the Corpus Christi Army Depot and other on-base facilities, and ended the visit with the B-52's special appearance.
"They get to climb inside the aircraft that Navy Corpus has here now and they also get surprises like today a B-52 showed up, but he didn't land, a T-38 showed up from Laughlin Air Force Base and they got to look inside the jet," Ruiz said.
He said he will take another child to have a similar experience again next month.
"It humbles me, it makes my heart feel good that we made the day happy for that one child," he said.
