CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Beeville Animal Shelter is getting ready to batten down the hatches for that cold weather that’s on the way.
They’re also hoping that there are some people interested in becoming foster parents to some of the cats and dogs they have here.
Kiki Gonzales is the adoption and rescue coordinator for Animal Control. She said this shelter is preparing for those freezing temperatures that are on the way.
”They’ll get blankets, they have beds that are above the ground so they’re not laying on the cold concrete,” Gonzales said.
Gonzales wanted to remind anyone who owns an animal to bring them inside, but, if they can’t do that, they had better have a good shelter for them to stay in. Otherwise, under a state law called the Safe Outdoor Dogs Act they could get ticketed.
”Any calls that we receive of dogs out in the elements below freezing weather is an automatic citation,” she said.
One of the dogs here at the shelter who is getting out of the shelter before the cold weather hits is this husky named Sky.
A rescue group out of nearby Goliad has found her a new home.
”We don’t have a problem with small stray dogs problem with large stray dogs. So, we desperately need people who are willing to foster the larger dogs,” Gonzales said.
City Manager John Benson said the city is happy with the shelter’s re-homing efforts, but it still may not be enough to tackle the stray dog problem.
"The next solution is a very costly solution spending over $1 million to build a bigger facility," Benson said.
In the meantime, Gonzales will continue to work to find all of the animals who end up here a new home, just as she did for Sky.
