CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A 44-year-old man finds himself in a local hospital Wednesday morning after a bike accident on Whitecap Boulevard and Reales Drive, according to authorities.
Corpus Christi Police said they responded to a call for the accident at 7:12 a.m.
When they arrived, they determined that the driver of a vehicle was traveling south on Reales Drive and approached the stop sign at Whitecap just as the bicyclist was traveling westbound in the bike lane.
As the driver attempted a turn onto the roadway, he collided with the cyclist.
The driver of that car received a citation for failing to yield right-of-way to oncoming traffic.
Just two weeks ago, police responded to a similar incident in the area, just up the road on Whitecap and Aquarius, where a 68-year-old bicyclist was hit by a car in late October, suffering serios injuries and shutting down the roadway.
That incident prompted calls from Island residents urging the city to look into safety improvement measures.
Dr. Bryan Gulley with the Island Strategic Action Committee told 3NEWS' Michael Gibson they were looking into asking urging city leaders to install bike lanes and more sidewalks along Whitecap Blvd.
