CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Taylor Ojeda, owner of La Brujita Boutique off of Morgan Avenue is feeling the alleged impacts of last week's heavy rainfall after part of her ceiling caved in Monday morning.
She said that when she got to work on Monday, she was at a loss for words.
"Today we came in and the ceiling fell down," Ojeda said.
She said she later learned what the primary issue was.
"There was a clog in the drain, like a really huge clog," Ojeda said.
However, she believes last week's heavy rainfall could also be a contributing factor.
"It definitely happened after the rain, I'm sure it contributed in some ways, with so much water consistently coming down coming through the gutters and everything," Ojeda said.
Protex Roofing owners Jorge Rivera and Landon Sherman said that they are aware of the weather and what it means to call Corpus Christi home.
"Gotten probably another five or six calls added to our normal call volume, just with the rains and we expect that," Sherman said.
The duo said that after heavy rainstorms, there are hidden signs that property owners should keep an eye out for.
"A lot of the times we get calls from people saying they have a spot in my ceiling. We'll do some investigative research, get in the attic," Sherman said. "Since you're going to have all that rain, that's when you're actually going to start seeing the water make it's way inside your house."
Rivera and Sherman said you can also safeguard your property by having roof inspections after heavy rain events to help protect from water damage, saving money down the line.
Ojeda said these issues go deeper than water damage.
"So I'm still a relatively small business, so if I don't work I don't eat. But it's still definitely a month to month kind of thing," she said.
