Voters reject CCISD Bond 2024 proposition

The district released a public statement Wednesday thanking voters for considering the bond.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Corpus Christi ISD released a statement Wednesday, thanking voters for considering the $135 million Bond 2024 package that failed to pass on this November's election.

Roughly 62 percent of voters rejected the measure for school consolidations and upgrades, making it the first time a CCISD bond proposal has failed in 20 years.

The package would have included a new elementary campus, additional class and weight rooms for Veterans Memorial High School, a second gym at Haas Middle School and renovations at some of the district’s older campuses.

The proposal included $30 million to make interior renovations to King HS classrooms, restrooms, locker rooms, windows & more.

Moody High School’s restrooms, locker rooms and corridors would have also benefitted from the bond proposal.

Finally, the district proposed $3 million to help improve theater programs through new stage lighting, high school projectors & electronic screens.

3NEWS spoke with the president of CCISD Board of Trustees, Don Clark, who said although the bond failed, the cost of improving schools doesn't go away.

"Just because the bond didn't pass doesn't mean the needs don't exist," he said. "We still have high-cost buildings when it comes to maintenance, when it comes to insurance. We still have underutilized buildings. We still have buildings that don't serve near the student population that they should and the costs are significant."

He says the next step for them is to assess how to move students into newer buildings. And although it is disappointing, they will go back, re-evaluate and bring the bond back to the ballot in two years.
