CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The city completed its council chambers modernization project revealing the $2.6 million upgrades during a special ribbon ceremony Tuesday.
The upgrades include a new electronic voting system, as well as improvements to the chamber's visual and audio accessibilities, with bigger monitors and a brand new audio system.
Also, there are now accommodations for individuals that are hearing impaired and wheelchair-bound residents.
Mayor Paulette Guajardo told 3NEWS the mission for the new chambers is to make City Hall an inclusive, transparent and inviting place for city residents.
"Now, the renovations aren't just renovations," Guajardo said. "They represent this being the people's chambers. This is a place where people gather, a place where critical decisions, millions of taxpayer dollars are allocated and invested back into our community for the people."
City Hall was built more than 35 years ago.
City leaders said they hope the renovations truly do define the city council space as the people's chamber.
