City Manager gives update on bond, other projects in Corpus Christi

Peter Zanoni shared high praise for various contractors working on city projects, in some cases, for over a year.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — City Manager Peter Zanoni gave an update on several ongoing capital projects -- some of which are nearing completion -- during the city council meeting on Tuesday. He also shared a few words for the construction crews who have been working on those projects, in some cases, for more than a year.

One of the projects highlighted by the City Manager opened in June and is already being used. Zanoni says the West Guth Skatepark has received high marks from skaters in the community.

Added to the list of completed projects will be next week’s opening of North Beach Park with new shaded seating areas and barbecue pits, a climbing wall for kids and new, safer restrooms for beachgoers.

Looking ahead to August, construction will be completed on the Bill Witt City Park Aquatic Center, which comes with both a family and leisure pool and a lap pool, along with a clubhouse.

The Police Training Academy will also be finished next month but won’t be ready for use until November, replacing the current two-room building that utilizes portable restrooms.

In 2025, March will see the completion of Fire Station #3 along Morgan Avenue. Zanoni said it will be the prototype for the City’s goal of replacing half of our 19 fire stations over the next decade.

Some major roadwork is also on schedule for next year, including finishing Everhart Road from SPID to Alameda Street with new underground utilities likely before October 2025, and Alameda Street from Louisiana Avenue to Texan Trail in December of that year.

Zanoni also had high praise for the various contractors working on these projects.

"Our committed local contracting community is delivering," he said. "You don’t see it much across Texas, where people are working Saturdays and Sundays, but our contractors are and we appreciate that."

Although not part of a bond initiative, the City Manager also pointed to work being done on Cimarron Boulevard from Airline Road to Legacy Point, citing it as an example of the city’s rapid paving program funded out of the annual operating budget. It’s a stretch of more than three miles and should be finished next month.
