City staff on standby during Juneteenth as heavy rain makes its way to town

City manager Peter Zanoni said that that staff members have set up a 24-hour operation that will run into the later part of the week.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — First Edition continues to follow the latest updates in flood prone areas in the Coastal Bend.

Corpus Christi city officials are all hands-on deck as they prepare for the upcoming weather event.

The Public Works Department is preparing for the rain-- with a 24-hour operation.

It is expected to go into Thursday morning.

That time frame also includes the Juneteenth holiday on Wednesday, as city manager Peter Zanoni noted when he spoke with 3NEWS.

"We will not only have staff on standby, but teammates that would have been off in observance of the holiday will be required to come into work, we've already made that determination."

Tuesday's city council meeting will award La Voya Creek to a contractor. The $20 million project will help neighborhoods nearby avoid flooding.

According to city officials, TxDOT will have high profile vehicles stationed in key spots for possible high-water rescues.
