CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Students over at the School of Science and Technology were visited by author Diana Lopez who has written many books celebrating Hispanic culture, including one about a Corpus Christi celebrity and the book adaptation of a popular Disney/PIXAR movie 'Coco'!
Her goal was to inspire the students through the art of literature. And with Hispanic Heritage Month set to begin in just a few days, she also wanted to tell students about the richness of the Hispanic culture in our area.
During her visit, she read her children's book about Corpus Christi-native Selena Quintanilla, "Sing with Me," with the students.
She said by exploring various cultures through literature, students are allowed to become better readers and gain insight they might not otherwise receive.
"I think that having books that are like this for the students helps them see themselves, and if they see themselves they might be more interested in reading and they might feel a deeper connection to the stories and be inspired to write their own someday," Lopez said.
Her mission is to continue to create and write more unique stories moving away from stereotypes and showing students how to love the diversity of their community.
