Commissioner Chesney provides update on concession funding for new Bob Hall Pier

Nueces Co. Pct. 4 Commissioner Brent Chesney explained how the pier will be laid out if he succeeds in acquiring a million dollars from third-party investors.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Nueces County Commissioner Brent Chesney says he is halfway to his goal of securing funding for a concession space at the new Bob Hall Pier. A restaurant space at the pier is something island residents have been asking for since the original was destroyed by Hurricane Hanna.

Chesney was recently tasked with securing funding for the third-party concession space at Bob Hall Pier. He got good news as the Port of Corpus Christi promised $500,000 toward that goal.

He said the new pier will be similar to the old design, but will have variations.

"It'll be similar in structure in how it was before, but it will be newer and nicer," Chesney said.

The commissioner explained how the pier will be laid out if he succeeds in acquiring a total of a million dollars from third-party investors.

"The county judge has been instrumental in this along with the Port in finding additional funds that will then make up the difference," Chesney said.

He added that the concession will be connected to the pier. .

"It will be connected exactly to the building that is there," he said. "So, it will be on cement piers and then it will be connected to the building that is there."

3NEWS spoke with a Padre Island photographer, John Morris, who has photographed the pier many times. He said he see's the potential that it offers the community.

"The pier's first purpose should be to facilitate fishing," Morris said. "So, they really need to think about the ability for a lot of people to fish comfortably."

Chesney said this purpose won't be lost with the new design.

"The other side of the pier, a smaller stand for fishing, bait, tackle and stuff like that," he said.

In the meantime, Chesney said he still has work to do to secure more funding.

"We need another million," he said. "The Port approved $500,00 today. I'm going to make a motion tomorrow to find the additional $500,000 in ARPA funds."

He said construction doesn't have to be complete until end of 2026, but has to be under contract before the end of this year.
