CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Art Ramos Jr and his wife Kay Ramos were celebrating their 36th anniversary when news that Beryl was headed to the Coastal Bend changed their plans from a relaxing weekend at the Omni, to a home project.
"Yeah, you just don’t know, we have too much to lose. We work so hard for our stuff, so we have to board up. Take care of what’s inside", said Ramos.
And although the hurricane missed us this time, they say those preps weren’t a waste.
"No, not at all! You know, this is mother nature, they’re the boss,” said Ramos.
The Ramos’ aren’t alone in their efforts. As you drive down the streets of Corpus Christi, plywood on the windows is the latest trend.
This is something that county leaders say is commendable.
"This is a coastal community, most of us have lived here through hurricanes and we understand that before they hit the coastline, they can do a lot of different things. So, we were really happy that folks did listen." said Nueces County Emergency Management Director Dee Hawkins.
Beryl has come and gone, but the Ramos family says that the boards are here to stay for now because this is just the beginning.
"The season has just started and with a storm of this size this early in the season, that’s probably a good sign we are going to have a very active hurricane season in our area", said Hawkins.
The Ramos family says they are ready for whatever comes their way.
"I don't know if we will leave them up all that time but we will probably leave them up this whole summer," said Kay Ramos.
