Fire-damaged Portland apartments demolished

According to the contractors it should only take about a month before they can start working on the new buildings.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — An apartment fire at the Land's End apartments damaged or destroyed 24 apartments and left 14 families displaced last September.

Conditions were hot, dry, and windy on that September morning which made the perfect breeding ground for a fire to grow.

The scene now at the Portland apartment complex is a small pile of rubble where three separate contractors have already demolished most of the four damaged buildings.

"We had the whole thing done in three or four hours," Ken Hobbs with Dawson Recycling said. "Now just loading it out and getting it gone. I think we'll be done within a week. We'll have everything down to the concrete and they'll start on the new process of building new buildings back."

Residents are happy to know that four new buildings will replace the damaged ones.

According to the contractors it should only take about a month before they can start working on the new buildings, and when they do the people who move in will have water views to enjoy for the entire time they live here.

Hobbs said normally, apartments don't want to offer repaired apartments after a fire.

"They're taking this opportunity to revamp the buildings and offer something new to the area," he said.
