CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — On Friday the Omni Hotel on Shoreline hosted the 10th anniversary Dr. Hector P. Garcia luncheon.
The annual event was started by the Dr. Hector P. Garcia Memorial Foundation to pay tribute to the life and legacy of the civil rights activist known as a champion for the rights of south Texas veterans.
State Sen. Chuy Hinojosa took the podium as this year's keynote speaker.
Dr. Garcia's daughter, Cecila Garcia Akers told 3NEWS that just in the past 10 years, the foundation has been responsible for helping several south Texas students get to college.
"I think that more people are involved with what we're doing," Akers said. "The foundation has had 10 successful years and we've grown tremendously. And we have provided endowments all over the state. And healthcare to Spohn the Garcia health clinic we've helped them too."
She added that money from the foundation's scholarships has even helped send students to medical school.
