CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — It was a somber celebration at a ceremony held in honor of Peace Officers Memorial Day at the Nueces County Courthouse Wednesday morning.
The ceremony paid tribute to all peace officers throughout the country who have paid the ultimate sacrifice defending citizens but especially the men and women who have died while protecting our Coastal Bend residents.
Nueces County has had 30 first responders who have been killed while serving our community.
Corpus Christi Police Chief Mike Markle took to the podium and read the names of those fallen in the line of duty here in the Coastal Bend. It, of course, included our most recent fallen officer Kyle Hicks who was shot while responding to a domestic disturbance in April.
Members of the Hicks family were on hand during the ceremony to accept a flower in his honor.
"The most important element of it all is the family members and today we had numerous family members of the fallen who were touched, honored and appreciative that this community did not forget their father, their son, their brother who lost his life serving this community," Nueces County Sheriff J.C. Hooper said.
