CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A group of women from Flour Bluff are calling for change after a pack of dogs has been running rampant through their community, even attacking their pets.
3NEWS spoke with Animal Care Services to understand their role in tragic situations like these.
They're often called "man's best friend", but for one Flour Bluff resident, the packs of dogs have been her worst nightmare.
"They're vicious, they're not doing it to eat, they're doing just it to be vicious," she said. "I had two of my beloved pets killed, it sucks."
She's not alone, fellow Flour Bluff resident Shelley Clark also knows the pain of losing her pet to these dangerous animals.
"My neighbor came over, and their camera caught the dogs killing one of our outside cats," Clark said.
Both women have been dealing with the pack since last year, and told 3NEWS that they've been in contact with city officials ever since.
Animal Care services interim manager, Miguel Escobar, said his team has been doing their part too.
"On our patrol today we found three canines and we found that those three were owned," Escobar said. "We took them back to their owners, we educated them and we also gave them citations because they were in violation of that ordinance."
Escobar is referring to the updated ordinance that classifies dogs as dangerous or aggressive. He said that at the end of the day it all boils down to responsibility.
"Responsibility of ownership," Escobar said. "Unfortunately we get tons of calls where animals are free from restraint or they cause injuries."
It's a situation Shelly said doesn't stop in her neighborhood. In fact, she said she's starting to see more.
"I have met people through Facebook and Nextdoor who have had their pets killed," she said.
For those who are still taking aniimal care ordinances lightly, Escobar has one clear reminder:
"There is a restraint law that needs to be followed at all times."
