CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Although more than 3.4 million Texans receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, SNAP benefits, it includes only 70 percent of families that actually qualify.
That's the reason behind the Coastal Bend Food Bank's upcoming SNAP Application Marathon day event.
Their social services team is hoping to not only get folks registered for SNAP but also spread the word that qualifying for SNAP isn't as difficult as you might think.
"In the state of Texas, we actually still have millions and millions of dollars available for hungry Texans. And here in the Coastal Bend, we actually have some of the highest rates of food insecurity," said Shelby Cook-Pena. "So, individuals who maybe think, "I know I'm not going to qualify, I have a job, or I've been denied before"; the requirements change year to year."
The SNAP Application Marathon is happening September 11 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
