CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — An islander student is heading to the Olympics!
Texas A&M Corpus Christi's very own Ryann Phillips has earned her spot to compete in the summer games on the USA Trap Shooting Team after winning the U.S. Nationals.
This has been an exciting journey for the 20-year-old. After her mother encouraged her to join 4H as a child, but to not show animals. Instead, Phillips turned to shotgun and archery.
Phillips originally began shotgun competitions in the third grade and started competing in bunker trap in 2018. She has since won multiple medals in the sport, all over the world, including the Olympic qualifying U.S. Nationals in Arizona.
The future Olympian tells 3News she's gotten to this point because of all of the support she's received along the way.
"I have lots of people backing me, lots of people I didn't even know were backing me and they have been for years, so I'm just so thankful for all of them -- I couldn't have done this without them."
Phillips will still be training locally and shooting in many more international competitions, before leaving for the summer Olympics this July.
