Richard Kirkpatrick against Danny Peña for Kleberg County sheriff

Incumbent Richard Kirkpatrick has been sheriff since 2017.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — In Kingsville, incumbent Richard Kirkpatrick (R) is looking to win a third term as sheriff against opponent Danny Peña (D).

Before he became sheriff, Kirkpatrick was a drug task force agent working to stop the flow of illegal drugs, guns and migrants that make their way up and down Highway 77.

Peña is a former chief deputy at the sheriff's department and is commissioned as a Special Texas Ranger with DPS.

Without going into specifics, he said he wanted to bring greater transparency to the sheriff's department if elected.

"I'm gonna bring back transparency, integrity, professionalism to the Kleberg County Sheriff's Office if I'm elected," Peña said.

Kirkpatrick says transparency has been maintained at the sheriff's office.

"I think it's always important to understand that transparency is part of everything we do in government," he said. "I don't know what more transparent than we have been and already that's going on for the entire seven years that I've been there."

Kleberg County has already seen around 2,000 early voters from among approximately 18,000 total registered voters.
