Nueces Junior Livestock Show takes off without a hitch amid freezing temperatures

With a delay, the animals made their arrival at the Richard M. Borchard Fairgrounds.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — This wintery weather did not stop the animals from making their arrival known at the Richard M. Borchard fairgrounds Tuesday for the Nueces County Junior Livestock Show.

According to county extension agent, Jamie Lopez, it was no easy feat to get these animals here during a winter event like the one sweeping south Texas.

"I mean you got to understand most of the folks here in the last 48 hours have been dealing with busted pipes in barns, so getting livestock ready to come here on top of having to deal with no water, broken water lines; it's been a challenge," Lopez said.

Nothing can stop these young competitors from showing off their hard work.

This year’s commercial doe grand champion, Makayela Gueldener, said more important than winning she’s happy her prize goat was healthy because that wasn’t the case for some of her fellow contestants.

"With the freeze it was kind of scary because goats can get sick very very easily," Gueldener said. "I’m very blessed that I got her here. She’s safe, she’s not sick, she was able to show and win."

When it came to cancelling the livestock events due to the weather organizers said that wasn’t an option.

"There’s no way we were going to cancel a show like this," Lopez said. "These kids have been working in some cases 11 months for steers, 5 months for lambs and goats just looking forward to this day."
