CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The London ISD Pirates are headed back to the classroom on Monday morning after an initial delay caused by construction to the high school campus's cafeteria floors.
Dr. Bill Chapman is the district's newest superintendent. As a Tuloso-Midway ISD graduate himself, he says it is exciting to return to his Coastal Bend roots, and although the construction has been a headache-- it's all worth it for the sake of the district's continued growth.
London ISD is adding new buildings to their campuses at the elementary and high school buildings and a new cafeteria. They are also planning to open a childhood education center next year.
"Construction is always stressful, making sure it gets done, especially by the first day of school... but luckily we're on track. Kids will walk in today. The buildings are beautiful; very proud of what's been done. It's always a great start to a new school year when you walk into some new facilities."
Dr. Chapman said the school's growth is measured by even more than the latest building projects-- but the district has averaged a growth rate of 6-7% each year over the last five years. They are expecting about 7% growth this year and believe that number is sustainable for the next few years.
The new superintendent said that this year will mark the first time he's moved to a year-round calendar, but the start of school is as exciting as ever.
As one of the first school districts to send students back into the classroom each year, Chapman said he wants students not to worry about their first few days back on campus as the slate of construction projects finish up.
"Start of school is start of school. There's excitement in the air there's a buzz in the air," he said. "It'll all be okay. Relax, and enjoy the ride."
