Man jumps from JFK Causeway to avoid intoxicated driver early Tuesday

The driver, Demitrius Lopez, eventually crashed into a ditch and was arrested for intoxication assault with a vehicle.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A man was forced to jump over the side of the JFK Causeway and sustained serious injuries in order to avoid a 23-year-old man Corpus Christi Police Department officers said was driving while intoxicated. 

Demitrius Lopez eventually crashed into a ditch and was arrested for intoxication assault with a vehicle. 

Police were called at 2:28 a.m. Tuesday to the 11000 block of SPID, near the Waldron Road exit in Flour Bluff, where they said Lopez's black car was driving eastbound. They said he lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the ditch.

Moments before, police said while driving into town, Lopez pinballed between the walls of the causeway lane, almost hitting the 58-year-old man.

That's when he jumped into the water to avoid Lopez. He was rescued by a Corpus Christi Fire Department boat crew.

After CCFD boat crew rescued the male from the water, and he was taken to a local hospital.

Lopez also was taken to a local hospital to be medically cleared for arrest and booking and was taken to the City Detention Center.
