CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — As part of their Hispanic Heritage Month celebration, nearly 50 students from Flour Bluff Junior High School took a field trip over to Del Mar College to learn how to make flour tortillas!
Lab coordinator and "head chef" for the instruction, Maria Mata, was able to share her secret when it comes to making this essential cuisine.
"Once you have the practice I think that helps a lot and of course the measurements and ingredients," she said. "The secret is the dough, how you again, the love you give when you are doing the dough."
Students not only learned how to make tortillas, but they were able to foster a better understanding of the history of Hispanic culture and how it impacts the world around us.
"I think it's very, something that should happen more often in classrooms, definitely learning some history behind other people's cultures," 7th grade student Liliana Zarate said.
Since the young generation learned how to master the tortilla they will now be able to pass on their knowledge of the recipe to keep the tradition alive!
