CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — This start of April marks the beginning of the sea turtle nesting season in the Coastal Bend, according to the Padre Island National Seashore. The national park released some tips for beachgoers to keep in mind as they begin to enjoy the spring and summer months.
Turtles are expected to nest both during the day and at night from April through August.
- If you see a sea turtle on the beach, do not disturb it. Mark the area and report the sighting by calling 1-866-TURTLE-5 (1-866-887-8535) or by notifying any park ranger.
- Keep an eye out for park bio techs and volunteers who are beginning daily beach patrols looking for nesting sea turtles.
- Obey posted speed limits. Now through
- Labor Day, the speed limit is 15 MPH on South Beach and North Beach.
- Fill in beach holes after you build your sandcastle. Holes left on the beach poses a risk to beach drivers, emergency response staff, and sea turtles.
- Check the beach flag posted at the Malaquite Visitor Center for the day’s forecasted rip current risk.
- Help keep our beaches clean. Free beach trash bags are available at the Malaquite Visitor Center.
