No plans for American Bank Center hotel: 'The community did not want to support that'

City leaders said the community made it clear it did not support the plan for a convention center hotel when they rejected Proposition A.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Citywide improvements were at the top of the mind in Tuesday's regularly scheduled city council meeting as leaders talked about reauthorizing the Type A fund, where one-eighth of a cent in sales tax collected goes toward the development of our sparkling city.

Leaders told 3NEWS that following Prop A's downturn last year, the city made it loud and clear where they stood with the idea of a convention center hotel.

Corpus Christi City Manager Peter Zanoni referred to the rejection of the proposed convention center hotel, that was planned for the American Bank Center, as part of Proposition A.

"By and large and overwhelmingly, the community did not want to support that, so we recognized that, we heard that," Zanoni said.

According to the city manager, the original plan was to, "Use the sales tax or other revenues, TIRZ monies, even hotel occupancy tax monies to help subsidize a convention center hotel."

Former Corpus Christi councilman David Leob who was against the hotel said there wasn't enough communication.

"If they had a community discussion about how to spend this money, very few to no would people would have said, 'I want to build a private hotel,'" Leob said.

Comfort Suites director of sales John Garcia said that if the idea ever does come back, he would like to see more transparency.

"I think the city needs to be transparent with them, form a committee or some type of hotel board and get them involved and from there move forward," Garcia said.

When it comes to the general use of Type A funds, today was the first day for official discussions. Zanoni said that keeping up with the current maintenance of the American Bank Center is a top priority.
