CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Nueces County Constables and Sheriff's Office deputies were called out to reports of a residential fire with someone inside of a home near FM 666 and War Bonnet Drive on Monday.
Pct. 5 Chief Deputy Marcus Martinez said the man who was inside had barricaded himself in before threatening fire crews--- saying he would fight with them if they tried to enter the home.
Martinez told 3NEWS the individual is well known to law enforcement, who understand that he suffers from intermittent mental health issues and bouts of instability. Police said the man was once found to be at fault for placing large rocks on the FM 666 highway near the house.
The incident began around 8:30 a.m. Monday when a caller noticed smoke coming from a trailer that authorities said belonged to the man inside's mother.
When fire fighters arrived, they said the man refused to come out-- they notified deputies from Nueces County Pcts. 3 and 5, as well as the Nueces County Sheriff's Office and law enforcement eventually entered the smoke-filled home, detained, and evacuated the man without further incident.
Fire crews then put out the source of the smoke.
He was reportedly arrested for possessing narcotics before being taken to Sphon Shoreline after the morning incident, the Pct. 5 leader said.
Chief Deputy Martinez said his office is now working with other agencies like the Adult Protective Services to get him the help he needs.
