CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The man shot was shot and killed by Corpus Christi Police Department officers early Sunday morning has been identified as Dwayne Johnson by his family
Police said Johnson was shot after they responded to a call at about 1:30 a.m. for an assault-in-progress neat The Ranch Dance Hall -- formerly Roper's -- on Corpus Christi's South Side.
Corpus Christi Police Chief Mike Markle said that when officers arrived, they witnessed an assault across the street from the club, at the corner of Everhart Road and Burney Drive.
As the officers approached, the suspect produced a gun over the assault victim, who was lying on the ground, prompting an officer to shoot the man.
He was taken to an area hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
The officer was not injured.
The assault victim was also taken to a local hospital for treatment.
The officers involved will be placed on administrative leave while the department reviews the incident, as per protocol.
