CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Nueces County Medical Examiner's Office has identified the man shot and killed by CCPD officers Monday as 22-year-old Anthony Rodriguez Jr; the ME confirmed to 3NEWS Tuesday.
A Corpus Christi Police Department officer shot and killed a man after he reportedly shot into a neighborhood several times and waved a handgun at officers near a car wash on Leopard Street and Nueces Bay Boulevard, according to police chief Mike Markle.
The suspect, whom Markle described as a young, white male, was taken to a local hospital where he died from his injuries.
Officers were taking a prisoner to the City Detention Center, which was recently relocated to the area, when they said heard the shots fired by the suspect at around 2:12 p.m.
Markle said the officer fired at least two rounds at the suspect, and he and the other officer present are on administrative leave, as per policy.
Neither the officers nor the prisoner in their vehicle were injured.
Leticia Silva said she was crossing Leopard Street when she heard a shot.
"I thought it was a backfire from a car so I ducked cause I got scared, but then I saw a guy running and I saw the cops running after him and then I heard three more shots'," she said. "Änd I saw the guy go down."
Another resident, who wished to remain anonymous, did not witness the shooting but said incidents like this happen all the time in the neighborhood.
"It's getting worse, day by day," she said.
She said she would like to see more officers patrol the area, so that she can feel safe doing everyday tasks.
"I am scared something is going to happen to me, you know, so I have to have somebody to come with me all the time," she said.
