Barbecue benefit to be held Saturday for Aransas Pass police officer injured in motorcycle accident

Capt. Alvin Luker was hit from behind by an SUV when the accident happened in May.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Blue Shield Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club is set to host a BBQ benefit to help support Captain Alvin Luker's recovery journey this Saturday. The event will take place at the Aransas Pass Civic Center from 10 a.m. until plates are sold out.

The Aransas Pass police officer finally arrived back home last weekend after a motorcycle crash in May sent him to the hospital.

Alvin Luker, an Aransas Pass Police Department patrol captain, was hit from behind by an SUV around two months ago on May 22. He was in San Antonio receiving treatment for broken bones, nerve damage and more.

He had multiple surgeries in San Antonio, followed by physical and occupational therapy. He credits the hard work done during that therapy as why he is back home in Aransas Pass. Luker said he will continue his therapy at home.

He said his family was with him at the hospital. Now, he is joined by his wife and son at home. He said his son moved from Colorado to Texas to help him recover.

"Just being around family has, there's, the health benefits, I think, totally outweigh being in the hospital sometimes," Luker said.

APPD Administrative Captain Stephanie Diaz set up a GoFundMe to help pay for costs after the accident. The goal was set at $10,000, and more than $18,000 has been raised so far.

"We are so grateful for it," Diaz said. "The family has expressed significant thanks for all the prayers, the donations and all the concern that has been shown for Captain Luker."

APPD Patrol Corporal Terry Camack was one of the people who responded to Luker's accident in May. After Luker went to the hospital, Camack said that he previously spent time in the same hospital. He explained that he told Luker he was in good hands.

He said it is good to see the Aransas Pass community coming together.

"It's a great thing when people actually step out and want to help individuals out who don't even, they have no knowledge of who they are, and they just want to help anybody out in any way possible," Camack said.

Luker's family rented a house in San Antonio so they could be close when he was there. He said the GoFundMe was a huge help with the costs.

"Without that GoFundMe, I don't think that would've been possible, so everything she did has been greatly appreciated by me and my family," Luker said.

He said he still has a long way to go recovering from his injuries, but hopes to return to his role with AAPD.
