Man charged with intoxicated assault after crashing into CCPD police unit, officer suffered major injuries

Corpus Christi police said the 18-year-old driver was at fault for the crash, which took place on Ayers and Baldwin on Saturday. He also suffered serious injuries.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A Corpus Christi police officer and an 18-year-old man suffered major injuries over the weekend after being involved in a car wreck that took place at the intersection of Ayers Street and Baldwin Boulevard. 

Authorities said the officer's unit was struck as it was traveling west bound through the intersection. The 18-year-old driver reportedly disregarded a red light and drove through the intersection before striking the police unit.

CCPD told 3NEWS that officers found the wrecked police unit near a traffic light pole in the intersection. 

That 18-year-old driver is now being charged with Intoxication assault with a vehicle that caused serious bodily injury. He was released to the hospital due to his injuries, which were serious. 

The officer involved and the other driver were both transported to a local hospital. Both suffered major injuries, but neither were considered life threatening.

At least four other individuals were sent to the hospital after a crash at the intersection of Ayers Street and Baldwin Boulevard early Saturday morning. 

The multi-vehicle accident happened at just after 2 a.m. Saturday morning when a police cruiser was hit at the intersection.
