CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — In Premont, Jim Wells County, REAL Inc. transportation and the Coastal Bend Food Bank teamed up to create the first brick and mortar food pantry for the town.
Including the new Premont location at 248 Southwest 1st Street, the food bank now has 108 brick and mortar pantries across the Coastal Bend and they are eager to bring the resource to even more communities.
Organizers shared with 3NEWS why it's so important to create accessibility and connection with rural residents because the need there is also big and growing.
"The numbers are everywhere where families are hurting, they need that resource so it was very vital for us to bring that resource to the community of Premont and their residents," REAL Inc. Mobility Services Manager Pam Garza said.
"REAL and Premont, we all came together and we created this great partnership," CBFB Agency Relations Coordinator Cynthia Carrillo said.
"It was a wonderful day, of course we started with a blessing from the sky with a beautiful rain, you can't go wrong with that, and with all the people coming together from this community it's a wonderful community that works very strong to help each other out," Jim Wells County Pct. 4 Commissioner Mauricio "Wicho" Gonzalez said.
The first curbside food distribution for the food pantry will be on Monday from 10 a.m. until noon, or until they run out.
Registration will be done on site.
