CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Barbara Canales says her daughter's experience with childhood brain cancer has never left her mind.
More than 17 years ago, the former county judge organized the Ready or Not Foundation's first fashion show in a parking lot with the intent to raise awareness of the impacts of childhood cancer diagnoses on patients and their families.
Her daughter Jackie, who was diagnosed with a brain tumor at just six years old, had just finished her chemotherapy treatments.
"We're one of the lucky ones. But every year in September, which is Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month, we remember those who are currently battling, those sadly who have lost their battle, and those like my daughter who are a survivor, but still living with late-term effects," Canales said.
This Thursday, Canales wants you to help her make a difference in other children's lives at the Ready or Not Foundation's 17th annual fashion show and fundraiser aims to bring awareness to the unique challenges of pediatric cancer.
This year's theme will center the new Willy Wonka movie quote: 'A world of pure imagination.'
"Jackie dreams of a world where there is no cancer for kids and so do I." Jackie Black will be the keynote speaker.
If you would like more information on the event, you can visit the Ready or Not Foundation's website.
The fashion show will take place at La Palmera Mall on Thursday, Sept. 9 from 6-9 p.m.
