Specifically, the 2024 Gulf of Mexico red snapper fishing season in federal waters---for vessels with federal for-hire (charter/head boat) reef fish permits--- will reopen on Monday at 12:01 a.m.
The season will run from Nov.18- Jan 1, 2025.
A typical season of fishing for the red snapper in federal waters (for vessels with federal for-hire reef fish permits) runs from June- Aug. 28, per NOAA Fisheries and the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council.
News of the reopening comes after updated landings data determined that the annual catch target-3,076,322 pounds whole weight- was not reached during the open season.
NOAA Fisheries is reopening the season to provide Gulf of Mexico federally permitted for-hire fishermen opportunity to catch the remaining target allocation.
NOAA says that 882,612 pounds whole weight of red snapper remain up for grabs.
This reopening does not affect the recreational private angler season, which is determined by state agencies.
