CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Rockport-Fulton ISD named Lesley Austin its lone finalist for its vacant superintendent job.

Austin -- who will begin the role after the mandatory 21-day waiting period -- is new to the Coastal Bend, coming from free charter school Trinity Basin Preparatory in the Dallas-Fort Worth area where she was deputy superintendent in charge of instructional programming, human resources and operations.

“She brings a wealth of experience, leadership, and service in education to our students, staff, and community," said R-FISD board president Kenny Cruzan. "We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Austin to our RFISD family."

Austin is originally from San Diego, California, but moved to Texas with her family in 1995.

She graduated from Texas A&M University in 2001 and got her master's degree in educational leadership with a principal certification from Lamar University in 2009. She then spent several years as a principal in the Maypearl ISD in the DFW Metroplex at the junior high and high school levels before earning her doctor of education from Lamar in 2017.

The district currently is being led by assistant superintendent CJ Lowery, who was named the district's interim in May 2023 after Joshua Garcia left the Rockport-Fulton area to take lead the Kaufman Independent School District.
