CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The local Salvation Army is working to keep those in the Coastal Bend warm during expected freezing temperatures.
Monday volunteers along with staff from the City of Corpus Christi came together to prepare over 120 warm meals for those staying at the Mother Teresa Shelter.
Commanding officer Nathaniel Doria said as long as the freezing weather persists, they will be teaming up with the city, the Mother Teresa Day Shelter and Good Samaritan to house and feed guests on a rotating schedule.
"We are dong this today, tomorrow, and the day after, as long as the weather is like this we are doing this," Doria said.
It's a measure that social services manager, Kyle Knutson, believes is vital.
"Honestly, when it gets to the 20s it's life-saving," he said. "Unfortunately we see a lot of elderly individuals out here that aren't necessarily watching the news, so there's people going out doing street outreach. I'm afraid if we didn't step in, individuals would die."
If you would like to support the organization monetary donations are the most beneficial due to the flexibility it provides, but they are also in need of sleeping bags.
"We also need sleeping bags," Knutson said. "We have about 135 now, so we plan on giving individuals who are staying with us sleeping bags and they get to keep those when they leave here."
The Salvation Army will have a soft opening Sunday evening ahead of the cold front at 7 p.m. lasting overnight until 7 a.m. Monday.
From there, individuals will be taken to Mother Teresa for hot meals and continued protection from the weather.
