San Diego firefighter died in car accident on way to work, department says

Matthew R. Sendejo was a 9-year veteran and dedicated member to the San Diego Fire Department. He served the community after Hurricane Harvey.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The San Diego Fire Department announced the death of one of their firefighters on Wednesday.

Matthew R. Sendejo was in a fatal car accident on his way to work last Friday.

Sendejo was a 9-year veteran firefighter and a dedicated member of the department.

SDFF said that he served his community and surrounding areas as part of Hurricane Harvey operations in Port Aransas back in 2017, answering several calls for those in need of assistance.

The department said in a post on social media that he played a major role in the organization's morale, saying: "[We] lost a big part of our department. Matt was the life and our jokester... Matt was always happy and full of life. Didn't matter what was going on in his personal life, he was always happy and found ways to make other ppl laugh and be happy even when he wasn't trying too lol."

Funeral services for the firefighter are expected to take place on July 27 at 8 a.m. in San Diego.
