CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — More than 40 students turned themselves in to Alice ISD school officials, admitting to being issued citations or drinking at house party last weekend, according to a press release from the district.
In a letter sent home Wednesday, Alice ISD Athletics Director Joe Castellano told parents and students they had until Thursday to self-report whether they used or possessed alcohol that night, and if they were issued a citation or not.
The students who self-reported now will be required to attend a 4-hour drug-and-alcohol counseling session.
"I think parents need to definitely talk to their kids about what's going on out there," said Eric Enim, an Alice parent who's child attends Alice High School.
Enim said that his daughter informed him about what happened. He said that while the students should be held accountable, athletes should be more so.
"They're people that we kind of look up to, so they should be held to a higher standard," he said.
Over 80 Alice High School students were issued citations for "minor in possession," after alcohol was served and distributed to people under 21 years old at the party.
One woman was arrested and charged for supplying the alcohol.
Alice resident Jose Sanchez said that while corrective action is necessary, true discipline starts at home.
"The parents, basically the parents. It's their duty to be like 'Hey, where are your children," he said.
Castellano's letter stated that students who turned themselves in would be given a 14-day suspension and a drug and alcohol counseling session.
It is unknown at this time if all self-reporting students or student athletes have been suspended.
The letter also stated that punishment would be more severe for students who did not self report and are seen in video or photos consuming alcohol that night.
