CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A SWAT team was called to the scene of a crash near the Ben Garza Gymnasium off Comanche Street, where a reportedly intoxicated driver had a gun in his hand, according to CCPD Lt. Edward Longoria.
CCPD was dispatched around 12:09 p.m. Thursday to a Howard Street crash where a car had driven through a fence.
When first responders arrived, police said it appeared that the driver was unconscious behind the wheel, but had a gun in his hand. According to Longoria, out of an abundance of caution, additional units where called including SWAT to ensure the individual was not a threat to residents nearby.
When the driver refused to get out of the vehicle, he was physically approached, taken out of the car and taken into police custody.
"The suspect was not responding to that, so he ended up contacted and extracted from the vehicle and was taken into custody," Longoria said. "He's facing charges for DWI [for] the accident and possible weapon charges."
