CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The first ever SNAP-a-thon marathon is being called a huge success following a positive turnout at the Coastal Bend Food Bank Wednesday.
"SNAP" benefits are a government program that can either be temporary or long-lasting to help those in need of food to be able to offset those costs.
The nonprofit was able to help hundreds learn of the services, apply for them and most importantly benefit from them in the long run.
"This is our way of combatting hunger, by helping people get assistance to purchase food. That way they can use the money to help their families, so our community can thrive," said the Coastal Bend Food Bank's community registered dietician Shelby Pena.
The event not only helped many get a foot in the door for SNAP benefits but it also gave them the chance to apply for other benefits such as Medicaid.
Even though today's event ended at 4 p.m., they are always "a phone call" and an appointment away to help you register for SNAP benefits.
