CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A man stopped at a railroad track in Kleberg County was lucky to escape injury on Monday after his truck was hit by a train.
The driver was in his 2007 truck at the track on County Road 2140 and Hwy. 77 between Kingsville and Ricardo when he reached over to pick up something he dropped, said Department of Public Safety Corpus Christi Sector Public Information Sgt. Harold "Rob" Mallory.
"Didn't realize he took this foot off the break just enough that the vehicle started creeping forward, that's when it was struck by the train in the front," Mallory said.
The train crossing has stop signs, but no arms to stop vehicles from rolling onto the track in a case like this.
Mallory said he doesn't know of any plans to install crossing arms at this location, and that discussion for a safety measure such as this would need to be a discussion between the railroad, county officials and the Texas Department of Transportation.
Neither driver was injured, and Mallory said the train stopped and police were called.
