CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — They say you are what you eat!
Well, folks with UT Austin's Marine Science Institute were putting that theory to the test out at the 88th Annual Deep Sea Roundup.
The research team collected samples from anglers who were willing to let them grab some from fish they caught in the tournament. It was all to see what was inside of them before they go inside of us.
Their study involves determining which nutrients we as humans could expect to absorb from different species when we indulge in seafood.
"The interesting thing to see is that there might be nutritional value in fish that people might not necessarily target, like gafftop fish," UTMSI Research Tech Elisabeth Frasch said. "A lot of people don't want to consume those, but they might have a lot of nutritional value... what people might consider a 'trash fish' or 'junk fish' could actually be really good eating."
Frasch was joined by Assistant Professor Simon Brandl who wanted to thank all of the competitors for being the muscle for today's data collection!
