CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The inaugural Veterans Memorial Bull Riding event is coming up in Kingsville this April.
The event is set to benefit VFW District 6 and other veteran support services in Nueces County.
George Varra is the district's VFW commander. The Beeville graduate and Marine veteran says the goal of the bull riding fundraiser is to bring awareness to veterans who need support and to raise money that goes back to the community, often in the form of scholarships.
He says that he's seen the need for the VFW increase in South Texas- the Kingsville VFW lost their building a few years back- and wants newer military veterans to know that the organization is there for them.
"We're here for you. That's the first thing I want to say. A lot of times you come home and-- it's hard."
After coming home from service for the first time in what would ultimately be a 26-year career in the military, Varra said he missed being around his brothers and sisters and understands the need that veterans have to connect with those they can relate to.
"When I got involved with the VFW, it all came back. I started feeling that brotherly love, the sisterly love," said Varra, who joined up straight out of high school.
The event will raise money for Nueces County's 18 area VFW's. Varra says they are looking for sponsors and community support.
